From Research to Reality: Digital Twins for Civil Infrastructure

Home » From Research to Reality: Digital Twins for Civil Infrastructure

We’ve completed the development of a software platform for digital twins of engineering structures. The project was supported by the OP TAK programme (Operational Programme Technologies and Applications for Competitiveness) and developed in cooperation with the CREA Hydro&Energy cluster. Special thanks to Jiří Hodák from company Vodní díla – TBD, for the support and contribution throughout the platform’s development.

The DESIGNTEC team has handed the platform over to full operation — today it runs on two locations: Dalešice dam and Bystřička dam. Details about how the platform works and how accurate it is are available on the link bellow.

Where Digital Twins make sense

A digital twin makes sense where monitoring is already in place, but the data is only evaluated retrospectively — decisions about interventions or operating restrictions are hard to back up with numbers. Typically for ageing structures, or where operating conditions are changing and you need to quantify the change in behaviour, not just estimate it.

The same principle of connecting monitoring, a computational model and prediction — running today on the Dalešice and Bystřička dams — also applies to constructions like bridges, tunnels, high-rise buildings, wind turbine towers. And to machines: turbines in various power plants, or aircraft jet engines.

Full criteria, Digital twin architecture and other details are on the link bellow.
